- Maurice Campbell
I was in the fourth grade when my teacher promised lessons in African and Black American history. I recall being so excited about the prospect of learning about my people.
However, anticipation turned into disappointment when the instructor never got to Africa or Black history. Years later, I decided to do something about it. I created a character in children's books with whom young readers could identify.
The Simone Project is based on a ten-year-old girl with Afro puffs, who teaches the importance of learning history. I specifically target elementary age students (Ages 6-11). "I remember how I was at that age. I want to give them the opportunity that I never had."
Since introducing Simone to schools, I have received positive feedback from teachers, parents and students. This program has been endorsed by several school boards and is being used by over 500 schools, libraries and organizations worldwide.
Knowledge of self is the greatest defense against inner city crime and drugs. Ignorance is the main fuel to the fire that burns within our youths. Many of our youths are angry inside. Many believe that we were brought to this earth to be slaves.
When I speak to them and tell them the facts about our history, how we were kings and queens, rulers, builders, scientist, doctors and explorers thousands of years before our enslavement, they are always left in awe. Learning history will bring unity and can be used as a connection to bridge the gaps.
Simone has been featured on TV and radio shows accross the nation as well as the following:
